Electro Deionization (EDI) Systems
SEDI is a continuous electrochemical process for water treatment. It replaces specialized ion membranes, mixed bed resins, and DC voltage with a standard acid-alkali chemical regeneration process. EDI cells contain a series of fine chambers; these chambers also include, as an alternative, mixed bed resin to remove impurities. Ion-specific membranes separate the chambers into an anionic section and a cationic section.
EDI systems are custom-designed to produce pure water for the pharmaceutical, energy, and industrial sectors.
While product water quality in EDI systems remains consistent over time, in renewable ion removal processes, the water quality decreases as the resin approaches saturation.
The most notable advantage of EDI systems is the elimination of the regeneration process and the associated hazardous regeneration chemicals—neither acid nor alkali is used. EDI systems have no labor or chemical costs for regeneration; instead, they consume only a small amount of electricity and can operate continuously 24/7.
Since most impurities in water are dissolved salts, the deionization process typically produces water of near-ultrapure quality, is rapid, and prevents sludge formation due to precipitation.
